- The opener arm or bracket is pulling away from the post or gate frame. If you can see a gap between the bracket and the metal it is bolted to, the weld has not failed yet but it is on the way. Once that bracket moves, the opener pushes at the wrong angle and the motor works twice as hard.
- A crack you can see with the naked eye. This sounds obvious, but on powder-coated gates the coating often hides the crack until it is serious. Run a finger along the weld line where the bracket meets the post. If you feel a ridge or a step, that is a crack waiting to open.
- The gate is noisier than it used to be. A groan or creak that was not there last season usually means metal is moving against metal where it should be solid. That is the sound of a weld loosening or a hinge pin wearing its hole out of round.
- The gate stops mid-cycle or reverses for no reason. The Mighty Mule control board senses resistance. When a failing weld lets the gate sag or bind, the board thinks something is in the way. The opener is not broken. The steel underneath it is.
